What are EIAs? - New legislation within most of Africa, including Botswana (Environmental Impact Assessment Act, 2005), has compelled ecosystem managers and developers to observe and mitigate the detrimental environmental, social and archaeological effects of their project activities.

Our Service - ESA helps to realize the need of developers in collating, weighing, mitigating and monitoring any short and long-term detrimental environmental effects, while developing practical alternatives that may increase the social and economic impact of the project.

Harnessing our ecological experience and local knowledge we use the latest computer software and EIA techniques for evaluating criteria and comparing alternatives, we produce detailed and comprehensive environmental impact statements (EISs) in accordance with the specific terms of reference for each project.

How it helps you - We specialise in conducting EIAs for the private sector, especially the safari industry.

Safari camps are by their very nature usually located within pristine habitats, where the potential for detrimental environmental impacts is high. By developing a close working relationship with the customer we try to ensure that the project operates within sound environmental practice, while also conforming to internationally recognised environmental standards.

To these ends, we provide an on-going environmental audit service to view the complete operation of the project. We have advanced, updated and skilled expertise in the use of;

  1. Environmental monitoring techniques, to reliably assess background information on ecological baselines; identify the potential for detrimental ecological impacts; develop effective and efficient monitoring programs and mitigation measures.
  2. Statistical and mathematical analysis, to accurately assess and weigh the criteria used to evaluate the impact of the project.
  3. Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing techniques and CAD application to analyse the spatial distribution and spatial interaction of the projects environmental impact.
  4. Land-use planning, to weight the ecological, social and economic benefits / impacts of the project.
  5. Environmental Auditing to ensure that the project operates within the confines of the internationally respected ISO 14001:2004 standards.
  6. Environmental Management Plans which form an important part of modern development practice and an integral part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process, providing a practical management tool that forms the basis of an environmentally sound operational plan.
