Botswana is home to some of the finest paleo-lithic art in southern Africa. Mystical paintings made famous by Laurence van der Post and set against the magnificent backdrop of the Tsodilo Hills. While the Tsodilo Hills are one of the more popular and well known historical sites in Botswana, there is a multitude of other, less known, but exquisite historical and cultural sites spread across the country.

Our service - ESA can organise trips expeditions to sites within Botswana that bring to life historical and cultural topics. Depending upon the time constraints, syllabus requirements or specific interests, each trip can be tailor made to suit the needs of each group.

  • We can visit well preserved and documented fossil beds, encrusted with fossilised remains from the Pleistocene. Or scenes of ancient initiation ceremonies, situated on islands of pink granite within a sea of glazing white salt pan.
  • We have long-standing friendships and working relationships with several different San communities. We can organise trips to spend time learning about their culture and to absorb their knowledge of medicinal plants or exceptional tracking skills.
  • Or you can visit and work alongside people from one of the many villages situated on the edge of the Okavango Delta while learning about the sustainable use of resources in this diverse and beautiful landscape.

The details of the trips - One of the directors of ESA will accompany the group for the whole expedition, and be joined by a qualified archaeologist, with a knowledge and passion for the history and culture of Botswana or by San guide that can communicate the passion of his people directly to you.

Cultural tours can be booked for a minimum of 4 days and up to a maximum of one month. A minimum number of 4 people is required for any trip, and ESA can accommodate up to a maximum of 20. Costs vary depending up the duration of each trip. Costs include tented accommodation, all meals, transport and the company of specialised, qualified guides. The details of all the expert guides used by ESA is available on request.

Cultural safaris can be interwoven with ecologically based safaris, which look in-depth at the surrounding ecosystem. Again this aspect of the safari can be tailor made to suit the time constraints and topics of interest for each group. All ecological safaris are led by Dr. Chris Brooks, who gained his PhD from the University of Bristol, studying the impact of human encroachment on the ecology of a migratory herd of zebra and wildebeest in the Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana.
