What is Field Research - Ecosystems across Africa, such as the Serengeti and Kalahari, have long been the home to many world renowned scientists, who have spent years studying the interactions between these systems and the animals which inhabit them. Field research is the only way that these scientists have been able to learn about and try to understand the behaviour of an animal species or the dynamics of the ecosystem. Good field research is based firstly on having a specific question that needs to be answered and then developing a repertoire of methods to gather the data that can help you to answer that question.

Our Service - At ESA, we teach you about the way to approach a problem or question about an ecosystem or animal species. We then show you how to gather all of the data to help you learn more about the ecological problems or to answer your question. We discuss and demonstrate a series of commonly used field research methods and show you how to decide which methods to use or how to develop new methods that help you the most.

What we can offer - We have a mobile safari camp that we can use to take you into the field, so that you are surrounded by the classroom. We go to private wilderness areas to teach you about the practical skills of field research, while also using our permanent camp, situated on the outskirts of Maun, to discuss the technical details of research. At our permanent camp we offer a range of lectures from local experts that can come and share their personal knowledge and experience on a diverse range of topics from the conservation of endangered birds to research on the hydrology of the Okavango Delta.

How it helps you – Field research safaris provide you with a knowledge base and practical awareness of how to approach scientific questions. The field research skills can help you with your developing education or burgeoning career.
