What are GIS & Remote Sensing Surveys? – Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing enable us at ESA to provide each
customer with an easily interpretable visual representation of the ground,
water and aerial based survey data. GIS software technology also allows us
to conduct remote sensing of the regions habitat types and to classify these
habitats, thereby complementing our ground, water and aerial based surveys.
ESA aims to provide accurate,
cost-effective and practical information about the composition, distribution
and quality of vegetation within the survey region. Using a GIS based
approach we are more able to accurately quantify the entire systems vegetation
composition.
How we do it and what it offers you – We
take a satellite image, or aerial photos of your region, and using these
in combination with the latest software technology we can quantify and
assess you habitat cover. These data, in combination with an understanding
of the animal species assemblage, ground data of species composition
and nutritional quality in combination with the management objectives
for the region, allow us to inform you, the concessionaire, safari operator
or ranch owner of the productivity and carrying capacity of the region.
ESA can
produce highly accurate maps of the infrastructure (buildings, fences,
pipelines, waterholes etc, etc) and road network.
How we do it and what it offers you – We
drive your road network, and using a highly sensitive GPS device we can
accurately record your road network. All fence lines, waterholes and
buildings are then also recorded. Using the latest GIS software, clear
maps of these features can then be created. These data are then overlaid
onto the habitat classification of the region, and, with further ground
surveys, the soil map of the region. These data can be used to significantly
help with the understanding of the regions dynamics and to assist with
management and conservation of the region.
